Camping Trip to Camp Campbell

Troop 208 invited the boys' fathers with us to Camp Campbell in Virginia September 19, 20 and 21, 1997. This Occoneechee camp is on Kerr Lake just across the Virginia border.

Saturday morning, we opened with a flag ceremony Flag Ceremony

Explorer Leader Mr. Stalker ran extensive waterfront activities. Here we see Casey Roche and John Couture in kayaks. Scouts in kayaks Later in the day, John Couture Sr., Andrew Williams and Billy Fairhurst completed the mile swim across the water you see in the background.

At the center of the waterfront activities were the "English Gates", a requirement for the Whitewater merit badge. English Gates For this requirement, A scout must maneuver his canoe or kayak through the following in under 2 minutes:

  • Forward through the gate
  • Pivot right
  • Forward through the gate
  • Pivot left
  • Sideslip right
  • Backwater
  • Sideslip left
  • Forward through the gate
  • Sideslip left
  • Backwater
  • Sideslip right
  • Forward through the gate
  • Just off this picture to the right, the scouts and their dads were swimming. This day broke a temperature record for the day in this region, hitting the mid 90's. Early Sunday morning, a cold front moved through, with winds gusting to 50mph and above.
